North Shore

Digital and AI Consulting for North Shore Businesses

Jotunfjell is an independent consultancy working with small professional practices across Sydney's Upper and Lower North Shore. One consultant, Andrew Walshe-Cutter, who can be in your office rather than on a video call.

Working on the North Shore

The North Shore rail line changes how an engagement runs. From Hornsby down through Wahroonga, Turramurra, Pymble, Killara, Roseville, Chatswood, Artarmon, St Leonards and North Sydney, a client site is a train ride and a short walk. That sounds minor until you compare it with areas where every visit is a drive, a car park and a half-day gone.

In practice it means a review can happen on site, in the morning, with the people who actually use the systems. We sit at the desk where the work is done. We watch someone open the practice management software, log a matter, send an invoice, chase a document. Most of what matters is in those three or four minutes, and almost none of it survives a screen share.

It also means the engagement does not end at a deliverable. If something needs a second look after the written plan lands, coming back in person is realistic rather than a scheduling problem. For Lane Cove, Willoughby, Crows Nest and St Ives, where the station is not at the door, a car still gets there inside a reasonable morning.

The businesses we tend to work with here

The North Shore carries an unusual density of small professional practices. Accountants, solicitors, architects, financial advisers, specialist medical rooms and allied health clinics, often two to twenty people, often long-established, often owned by the partners or the family who built them. Chatswood, St Leonards and North Sydney hold the larger office floors; the upper North Shore runs more to the single-practice suite and the home office on a quiet street.

Two things follow from that mix. First, these firms are old enough to have accumulated systems rather than chosen them. A practice running twenty years has software layered on software, each piece added to solve one problem by someone who may have since left.

Second, confidentiality here is not a policy document. It is client files, financial records, health information and professional obligations with real consequences. That makes the question of which AI tools staff may use, and on what data, far sharper than it would be in a business with nothing sensitive on the books.

Macquarie Park is a different proposition. The corporates and technology employers there generally have in-house IT, and we will say so rather than pitch against it.

What usually comes up

The same patterns recur in practices of this size and age.

Systems that grew rather than got designed. Three places the same client address is stored, none of them agreeing. A spreadsheet that quietly became the system of record because the software could not do one thing in 2014.

A practice management or clinical system nobody has reviewed since installation. The licence renews, the invoice gets paid, and half the modules have never been switched on. Sometimes the right answer is to use what you already own properly rather than to buy something.

Staff using AI informally. Someone pastes a client letter into a free chatbot to tidy the wording, with the best intentions and no idea where that text goes. This is now common, rarely malicious, and usually invisible to the principal until somebody asks.

A website built once and never touched. It loads slowly on a phone, the listed partner left two years ago, and nobody is sure who holds the domain or the hosting login.

Owner dependency. One person understands the whole arrangement, and that person is the one too busy to document it.

How to start

Three defined engagements, each with a written output and a fixed starting price. All prices exclude GST.

  • Digital Review — from $1,200. A half-day on site, then a written action plan within a week.
  • Transformation Plan — from $2,500. A staged roadmap for one defined change, over two to three weeks.
  • AI Confidentiality Set-up — from $2,500. Business-grade AI tested on de-identified data, with a policy, a register and a walk-through for your team, over four to five weeks.

Websites from $1,000 and local SEO from $350 per month are delivered through The Website Workhouse, a related business with the same director. That relationship is always disclosed. A written website audit through The Website Workhouse is free.

Common questions

Do you come to us?

Yes, and it is the normal way we work on the North Shore. The first review is usually done in your office, because watching the actual workflow tells us more than any description of it. Travel within the area is included in the quoted price.

Do you only work on the North Shore?

No. We work across Sydney and remotely. The North Shore simply makes on-site work practical, so engagements here tend to include more face-to-face time for the same fee. Further afield, more of the work happens by call and screen share.

Are you more expensive because you are local?

No. Prices are the same wherever the client is, and travel within the North Shore is not charged separately. Being nearby reduces our cost rather than adding to it, which is why a half-day on site fits inside the review price.
